Apple is Switching to the R2 Chip in the Vision Pro

For those who missed it, the Apple R1 chip was responsible for processing data from the headset’s cameras, sensors, and microphones to track eye movements, hand gestures, and head position. The R2 will perform these same tasks with higher performance. An improvement in the device’s battery consumption is also expected, thanks to the energy efficiency gains from the 2nm process.

There is speculation that the new Vision Pro could be unveiled this year. However, there are also claims that Apple plans to release a “truly new” Vision Pro generation in 2027. It is not yet clear whether the R2 chip will appear first in this year’s updated model or in the new generation slated for 2027.

It is said that this chip strategy, developed in parallel with Apple’s other products, could coincide with the A20 processor and C2 modem expected to be featured in the iPhone 18. This would allow the company to achieve significant hardware synergy by using the 2nm process in both its smartphones and the Vision Pro.

While the new Vision Pro may not bring radical design changes, it promises to deliver a more advanced user experience with the R2 chip. However, there is currently no definitive information on the device’s pricing or release schedule.
